The local club for Lochaber & District

History of the Club

The club began in 1976, and thanks to the amazing record keeing of previous club members there is a huge library of information, stories and pictures covering the last 31 years. It is not possible to put all of this onto the site but gradually we hope to add bits and pieces.

If anyone has any favourite memories they would like to see in this section please contact Sharon Donald on mailto:sharondonald@btinternet.com or see her on Tuesday club night.

Obedience.

Congratulations to Glen & Lynne!

On Saturday 16th April 1994 they won beginners at Leven Open Obedience Show.

On Sunday 17th April they were 4th in Beginners at Knightswood Championship Obedience Show.

What a weekend!

On Saturday 23rd April at cambuslang Open Obedience Show, Lynne and Glen had their 2nd Beginners win just a week after their first.

'A Border Collie - a stray picked up by Lochaber District Council's dog warden just 20 months ago - brought canine kudos to Lochaber last weekend. "Glen", who was eventually rescued and trained by Lynne MacCallum (pictured above), Inverroy, and is around two years old, topped a field of over 40 entries at Leven Open Obedience Show earlier this month, winning the Beginners Section and then repeated his succes at Cambuslang Open Show last weekend. Says Lynne, "Glen is very bright and keen to please." They train at Lochaber Canine Society which meets in Inverlochy Village Hall each Tuesday evening.'  (taken from local press cutting).

Last weekend (Sat 29th/Sun 30th Oct) the Competition Dogs and handlers had a very informative training session with Jennie Watson from County Durham. She put us all through our paces and certainly gave us a lot to think about and work on over the winter. We had quite a bit of fun as well.

their Gold Medal Tests:

Isobel with Ria

All with distinction! (97% and over)
Congratulations to everyone!

1995 - August - First Full Champion Border Collie

For the first time in the breed's
14-year history as a show dog with
CCs on offer, a full champion
Border Collie has been crowned.
In order to qualify as a champion
a Border Collie must not only obtain its three challenge certificates but must pass the Show Border Collie Working Test held under the auspices of the International Sheep Dog Society.
In practice this test has proved much harder to pass than the equivalent for gundogs, and the first dog to do so and gain its three CCs is Heather Turners Locheil Look North (Nap).
Now six years old, he won his first CC as a junior in 1990, passed his working test in May last year at Peterborough, gained his second CC late last year and his third at Welsh KC last weekend, plus BOB. He also has four RCCs.
Homebred by former CC record holder Sh Ch Viber Travelling Matt from Corinlea ex Lethans Lace at Locheil, he has a CC winning litter sister. (from newspaper article)

1995 - August - TV Fame for Local Dogs

Pictured here are two famous TV stars of the
1996 new series of Hamish MacBeth - watch
your televisions in the spring to see Jock II,
otherwise known as Irene's Fraoch.

They have spent a lot of August and September travelling up and down for filming at Plockton, thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Other local dogs also got in on the act:

Four year old Winnie the black labrador owned by local vet Lorna Ungoed-Thomas has a starring part as a gundog owned by the people in the 'big house'. Winnie is a star in her own right and has competed at Crufts and achieved her gold medal in the top obedience class of the local club.

A flat-coated retriever owned by Bob Tait of Sutherland Avenue, Fort William and a West Highland Terrier belonging to Marion Cairns of Victoria Court, Fort William. Susie the springer spaniel owned by Christine MacLean of Abrach Road, Inverlochy also stars.

Club trainer Heather Turner was asked to handle the animals on set for a few weeks and also supplied some of the dogs.

1995 - 23rd September - 1st Lochaber Open Show

It was raining cats and dogs outside -
but it was reigning dogs inside as a parade of prize pooches saw the first Lochaber and District Canine Society Open Show go off in fine style.

Hundreds of dogs from all over Scotland and beyond, travelled to
Fort William for the event at Marco's, An Aird on Saturday.

Delighted Society Chairman Mrs Lorna Ungoed-Thomas said she was extremely pleased with the way the inaugural event had gone, with a good turnout and no major hiccups. And the date for next years event has already been set. (from local press)
