dog club

The local club for Lochaber & District

General Notes

The Club has a library of training videos and books for the use of Club members, if you wish to borrow any of these please ask at the desk.

The following is a list of things to bring with you to the classes:

  • Dog Collar: Flat collar or half check.
  • Lead: Rope, leather, nylon, not chain which hurts your hands and is difficult to use.
    (No flexi-leads in the hall.)
  • Titbits: Smething really tasty! (for your dog).
  • Toys: One that your dog likes to play with at home. (NOT squeaky, this can excite other dogs.)
  • Poop-Scoop or Poly Bags: It is absolutely essential that owners clean up after their dog, both inside and outside the hall. Failure to do so could cost us the venue.

Please try to arrive in time for your class and wear appropriate clothing eg. flat shoes and trousers.

If you have male dogs please try to restrain them from lifting their legs against the pillars outside the Nevis Centre. (This does not look good for the Club and encourages bitches to do the same.)

If you have to leave your class for any reason, or are late in arriving, please make sure that you are not walking through another class, walk around the edges of the hall.

RESCUE DOGS of all ages are to be assessed before joining a class.
This is in the best interest of the dogs and the owners. Please ask at the desk for more details.

MOST IMPORTANTLY - HAVE FUN WITH YOUR DOG!

Puppy Classes - 8 week courses

Instructors -  Morag (Tel: 01397 772369, email: neil@mackell.wanadoo.co.uk ) & Christine

Puppy Classes are divided into two.
The older puppies and more experienced will be in Group A or progress to the Intermediate Class.
The younger and newer puppies will be in Group B.
Your trainer will tell you which group you are in on the first class of your course.

Next Puppy Class course starts on Tuesday 31st August 2010

Please register on Tuesday 31st August.

Please ensure that you do register on the above date, paying in advance will reduce the time spent each evening on arrival and allow the class to start on time.

All puppy classes will have to be pre-booked and paid for in advance.
£25 for a course of 8 weeks. This includes a £5 Club Membership fee.

A new course will start every 4 weeks.
After 4 weeks the puppies in Group B should be ready to move into Group A for the following 4 weeks.

The start time will be 7.30pm the class will last for 45mins - 1 hour.
Group A's class will be held in front of the stage on the right hand side of the hall.
Group B's class will be held on the right hand side of the hall behind Group A

It is very important that puppies start their training as early as possible, this is a vital time for influencing a dogs future behaviour.

Do begin simple training the day that the puppy arrives in your home. Provide it with:

  • a well fitting collar
  • a private place to sleep
  • a designated play area, and
  • suitable toys (these toys belong to you, the pack leader, and should not be left lying around).

Your pup's mind is most open to new experiences when it is under 12 weeks old. The more it experiences now - children, other animals, traffic, people (the list is endless) the more it will take these things for granted.

Ensure that your pup learns as much as is necessary, while it is still young, to enable it to live the life that you have planned for it...

Lure Coursing

Organiser: Vicki-ann Tompkins (01397 701704)

Lure Coursing is open to all dogs over 4 months of age and is especially good for dogs which love chasing and who would benefit from the opportunity to use some excess energy! The emphasis is very much on having a fun and sociable time. It is held in a fenced area so it is good for dogs who may not be reliable on recall. Dogs can be run singly or in pairs and the course can be adapted to suit the fitness, age and ability of the dog.

Cost is £2.00 per dog and sessions are scheduled about once a month.
Watch the Diary of Events page for firm dates.

Due to problems with a suitable venue we have been unable to run the Lure Coursing this year, if anyone has any thoughts about a venue please contact Vicky Ann. The site should be fully enclosed with no livestock in site, reasonably flat and well-drained.
